Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue

| Apr. 14th, 2008 10:39 pm Only read if you want to feel overwhelmed I'm only writing this so I can stop thinking about it. UMC enthusiasts (that means you,
brassknight86 , and the lovely Creative Crocheter that I'm sure will show up soon), however, will want to note what I'm doing the weekend of April 25th and May 23rd.
So let's assume for a second that I'm not enriching 2 of the classes I'm taking this term. Let's assume that my only academic challenge is writing my honors thesis. Let's assume that because my 2nd job is so rewarding and eccentric, the hours I work at it don't exist. Now let's look at this term's schedule, shall we? And don't tell me this is overdue- it's only the beginning of the 3rd week out of 10 + finals. Just because weeks far in the future seem free doesn't mean they're not going to fill up later. Or sooner.

| Feb. 9th, 2008 11:15 pm Perspective- a paragraph of sex and then it gets churchy Many things going on lately, but tonight was church. Wesley's big chili cook-off to raise money for the youth work trip. There were about 12 entries this year, all anonymously labeled. My favorite's were Spicy Italian, Sweet Beef, Fiesta con Polla (spicy), and No-Name. It was intriguing to note that the ones named 'chili' or 'traditional' were tasted least. Made me think of an interesting article I had to write an essay on for one of my midterms yesterday (I had two, and a 'quiz' based on 300 pages of reading). It was called "'Pricks' and 'Chicks'- A Plea for Persons" and went into a lot of the linguistics behind how men and women are described.
What's the difference between a 4-legged vixen/fox and a 2-legged one? One gets chased and slayed, the other gets chased and laid. Despite foxes being seen as clever, cunning, sleek, fast, etc, they are still no match for man, particularly mounted. And who finds baby birds, toys for little kids, or infants arousing? And yet the names (chick, doll, baby) persist with heavily sexual connotations. Words of weakness, powerlessness, lack of brain and will and choice and awareness and consciousness. The 2nd part of the article focused on specific terms, phrases, and slang for the sex act itself with special markers depending on whether the verbs implied one-sided action or mutuality with a further analysis of issues such as possession/aggression/choice. Also which verbs are used almost exclusively to describe the male side although in his '20 (25?) year update' he mentioned how this is shifting and openly wondered why the aggressive/action verbs use by women tend to still imply penetration ("I screwed him" versus "I engulfed him", etc).
The head of the firm, an extremely intelligent white-haired man who, while kind, absolutely loves to talk, reminded me of a story I had heard some weeks past. Wesley had decided to "sponsor" me when I expressed interest in going to the "TREEmendous Gospel of Hope" Reconciling Ministries program. "Sponsor" meaning that I had asked to be included in the carpool heading to the event because I had $10 to spare for the special student entrance fee (normal was $50) and they were so excited a young person was going along with that they refused to hear of me paying. The lead speaker was a certain retired bishop who, while currently residing out of state, still holds a special fondness for the Northern Illinois Conference. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it was impossible for me to turn down an opportunity to hear Rev. C. Joseph Sprague speak once again (I know that doesn't mean much to a lot of people but I know I've referred to him as "the really cool bishop we had who kept getting charged with heresy" to quite a number of my friends- my family's never been much for applauding conformity and traditionalism). ayamechan1113, yuri93, if you've gotten this far in my incredibly churchy post, I think you'll like this quote of his, a statement that just happened to be one of the reasons for the heresy charges: "I must dissent from Christocentric exclusivism, which holds that Jesus is the only way to God's gift of salvation. Such an arrogant claim ... limits God in ways that humans cannot."
This, this right here, is matrimony. Yes there were all the polite and friendly couples and husband-wife teams at Bethany but there's just some sort of life about the spouses at Wesley. Maybe it's a continued sense of romance- one of the older couples consider themselves to be newly weds as they've been married less than 5 years and the husband always remarks about how he can't live without her. Maybe I was just too young, or perceived too much as the little girl growing up at Bethany to ever be part of that world. I don't know. There's a laughter, a joy, an incredible amount of teasing and smiles that goes on, that I've never witnessed in any other group of 60-80 year olds before.
